Impact

Measured by the kilo, reported honestly

Every collection is weighed, sorted by kind and tied to a neighbourhood. That gives KaSmart a clear record of what was kept out of drains, dumps and open burning.

What we record

Every kilo, by kind

Weight, kind of waste, sorting quality, date and area for every collection, from every registered home and business.

What we estimate

Emissions avoided

An estimate of the CO₂ equivalent avoided by collecting and diverting that waste, worked out per kind of waste.

Who we share with

Local governments

KaSmart's figures are available in the layout of SWIMS, Uganda's Solid Waste Information Management System for local governments.

Carbon estimates

How we estimate emissions avoided

kilos collected × emission factor = kg CO₂e avoided

Each kind of waste has an emission factor. How well a bag was sorted doesn't change the estimate, because the waste was diverted either way. E-waste has no factor yet, so its weight is reported separately and never guessed.

These are estimates, not certified carbon credits. KaSmart is not registered with Verra, Gold Standard or any other carbon standard, and it does not sell carbon credits. The factors are provisional until they are reviewed and signed off.

Reporting

Figures you can check

  • Only what we collected. KaSmart's figures cover waste from its registered customers, not everything a city produces.
  • Gaps stay blank. Where we don't have a figure, we leave it blank rather than fill it with a guess.
  • Each record keeps its factor. When a factor changes, the new one applies from then on; past records are never quietly rewritten.
  • No personal data in exports. Reports identify homes and businesses by KaSmart ID and type only, never by name or phone number.

Local governments and partners who want KaSmart data for their area can get in touch.
