How it works

From sorted bags to mobile money

KaSmart is simple on purpose. Here is everything that happens, from the day you are registered to the day you cash out.

  1. 1

    Register

A KaSmart officer registers your home, business or institution and gives you a QR card with your KaSmart ID.

  2. 2

    Subscribe

Choose a plan and pay by MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, card, cash or bank. Your collections earn points while it is active.

  3. 3

    Collect

A Green Agent scans your card, weighs each bag of sorted waste and notes how well it was sorted.

  4. 4

    Reward

Points land on your account for every kilo. You get an SMS, and the app shows exactly what was recorded.

  5. 5

    Redeem

Cash out your points to your MTN MoMo or Airtel Money number whenever you are ready.

1 · Register

Your KaSmart ID and QR card

A KaSmart officer registers your home, business or institution with your phone number and location. You get a bank-card-size QR card with your KaSmart ID, which looks like KS-7F3K-9Q2M.

The last character is a check character, so if an agent types your ID by hand, a typo is caught straight away and your points never go to someone else.

The phone number you register with is the one you sign in to the app with. Only registered numbers can sign in.

2 · Subscribe

A plan keeps collections coming

Your subscription pays for regular collection. Pay weekly, monthly or yearly by MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or card in the app, or by cash or bank through KaSmart staff.

Points are earned while your plan is active. If it lapses, the Green Agent still collects and records your waste, but that collection earns no points. You get an SMS reminder before your plan ends. See the plans.

3 · Collect

The Green Agent visit

Green Agents are KaSmart's field collectors. At your door, the agent:

Scans your card

From the printed card or the QR in your app. It works even with no network; the record syncs later.

Weighs each bag

Each kind of waste is weighed on its own, to one decimal of a kilo.

Notes the quality

Clean and sorted, partly sorted, or poorly sorted. This sets how many points each kilo earns.

  • Plastic bottles (PET)Water and soda bottles

Need a collection outside your usual day? Request a pickup in the app and the nearest Green Agent on shift is sent to you.

How points are worked out

kilos × rate × quality = points

Each kind of waste has its own rate in points per kilo, set by KaSmart and shown in the app. When rates change, the new rate applies from a set date; past collections keep the rate they were recorded with.

The agent's phone shows an estimate on the spot. The final points are confirmed by the KaSmart system and sent to you by SMS. Your history in the app works like a bank statement: entries are never edited, only corrected with a new line you can see.

  • ×1.0Clean and sortedOne kind of waste per bag, emptied and dry.
  • ×0.7Partly sortedMostly one kind, with a few things mixed in.
  • ×0.4Poorly sortedMixed, wet or dirty. Still collected, earns less.

5 · Redeem

Cash out to mobile money

Choose how many points to cash out and the MTN MoMo or Airtel Money number to pay. The app shows what your points are worth in shillings before you confirm.

  • Your balance only drops once the payout is confirmed.
  • If a payout fails, the points go straight back to your balance.
  • You can follow each request from requested to paid in the app.

Bring KaSmart to your home or business

A KaSmart officer will register you, hand over your QR card and set up your first collection.
